Earlobe Repair and Reduction (Loboplasty)
Earlobe reduction surgery, also known as loboplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that aims to reshape and reduce the size of the earlobes.
It is performed to correct elongated, sagging, or stretched earlobes that may be a result of aging, genetics, or wearing heavy earrings. Earlobe reduction surgery can often be used to repair and close up stretched or elongated earlobe piercings caused by wearing large-gauge earrings or wide diameter “tunnels”.
During the procedure, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the earlobes. Dr. Barnsley then carefully trims away excess tissue from the earlobes, reshaping them to the desired size and contour. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthetic at our Nanaimo clinic.
Questions & Answers
Is earlobe reduction surgery painful?
Local anesthesia is used during the procedure to ensure that patients do not experience pain. However, some mild discomfort or tightness may be felt during the recovery period, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
What is the recovery process like?
The recovery from earlobe reduction surgery is generally straightforward. You may experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the first few days after the procedure. It is important to follow post-operative instructions, such as keeping the incisions clean and avoiding strenuous activities that may put pressure on the earlobes.
How long does the procedure take, and when can I return to my normal activities?
The duration of the procedure depends on the complexity of the case, but it typically takes around 1 hour. Recovery time varies, but most patients can resume their normal activities within a few days to a week after the procedure.
When can I resume wearing earrings?
If the piercing is not removed, it is recommended to avoid wearing earrings for a few weeks after the surgery to allow the earlobes to heal properly. We will provide specific instructions on when it is safe to resume wearing earrings, which is typically after the initial healing period. Often, the piercing is removed during the procedure. We recommend waiting 2 months before piercing the ears again.
